Okay, let’s get real for a second. If you’ve been in this game long enough, you know there are two types of directional drillers; those who have had their rod stuck, and those who will. There is no middle way. I don’t care if you’ve got 20 years under your belt or you’re the cockiest newbie on the crew.

Mother Earth doesn’t look at your resume. One minute you’re humming along making beautiful footage and the next? Clunk. It is all quiet. Your stomach drops into your stomach and that sweet, sweet drilling fluid starts bypassing like it’s got somewhere better to be.

It seems like only yesterday that I had my first big “oh-no” moment. I was working on a job in some nasty clay that looked innocent enough at first glance. We were maybe 80 feet down, and I figured I’d just power through a little bit of a torque spike. Big mistake. That rod locked up harder than your grandma’s jar of pickles she forgot to open. The mud motor whined and my ears were ringing and I just stood there staring at the control panel like it would give me some magic answer. It didn’t. So breathe Get yourself a cup of coffee, or a cold one if you’re off the clock already, and let’s walk through this mess together.

Step 1. Stop. Take a breath. Don’t Be a Hero

First thing I want you to do is nothing. I mean it. Take your foot off the gas. You do not want to tug on it here as if you’re trying to start a lawnmower. I’ve seen guys go crazy and put 10,000 foot-pounds of torque on a stuck pipe, and you know what happens? You take it apart. Then you have a stuck and broken rod, which is a whole other level of nightmare we don’t want to deal with.

Once a customer called me, totally frantic. “I’ve got 200 feet of rod stuck and I’ve been hammering it back and forth for an hour!” My first question was, “Is it moving, period? Hush. He’d just been reaming a nice little hole for the rod to get even more comfortable in, just spinning it in place. So rule number one respect the stuck. Before you start throwing horsepower at a problem, assess it. Check your mud pressure. Check your torque. And when it stopped, what were you doing? Were you pushing? TO PULL? Spinning? The first clue is that tiny detail.

The “Back-Ream” Tango (My Favourite Move)

Ok. So you’ve stopped freaking out. So what’s the next step? If you haven’t buried it completely, the back-ream method is your best friend most of the time. And no, I don’t mean just laying off the throttle and mashing the gas pedal. This is a dance And you’ve got to be soft.

I call it the jiggly. You’re going to back-ream slowly, like 5 or 10 feet and pull light. Imagine trying to get a stubborn mule to go forward. You don’t scream at it, you just give it a little nudge. The objective here is to rupture the friction ring around the rod. That clay or sand has essentially created a suction cup around the pipe.

This one job in Colorado I’ll never forget. We were in this rocky, dry ground and I got stuck about 150 feet in.” I did the wiggle, and nothing. So I backed off a little and let the mud sit for a minute to soak into the formation and tried again. She gave that time.” A quarter turn only. But the quarter turn was all I required. I worked that rod back and forth an inch at a time until I felt that beautiful give and pulled it free. It was 45 minutes. It felt like 4 hours. But it worked, because I didn’t rush it.

The “Let It Soak” Strategy (Go Get Lunch)

Here is a trick that sounds too simple to work but saves my bacon at least twice a year. If the wiggle isn’t working, and you’re not in danger of collapsing the borehole, turn the pumps off. Yeah. Shut it all down. Leave the rod there for 15 or 20 minutes.

Why? Drilling fluid is not only to transport the cuttings. It actually serves to lubricate the rod surface. If you just stop, and let that fluid soak into the surrounding soil. That expands the pore pressure just a tiny bit. Sometimes that little bit is all it takes to release the friction lock. I tell my guys all the time, If you’re getting frustrated just walk away. Go look at your mudtanks. Eat a sandwich. Tell your wife you love her. Phone her. Then come back and turn on the pumps and try the back-ream wiggle again. I swear, half the time the rod just pops right out like it never got stuck in the first place.

When to Call a Friend (The “I Give Up” Step)

Okay, so you’ve wiggled, you’ve soaked, you’ve muttered a few choice words under your breath and it’s still not budging. Now we’re in the big time. That’s the point where you have to make a choice: am I saving the rod or am I saving the hole?

If you have an overpull washer (and you really should), now is the time to use it. This is the tool that allows you to use the pulling power of your drill rig without sacrificing your swivel. We’ve all done it – set the pull-back pressure right up to the red line, and watch the gauge like an eagle. My golden rule? Don’t exceed 80% of the maximum tensile strength of your rod. I know you want to just send it but I have seen rods neck down and snap from the stress, believe me. Then you are fishing. And fishing is the most expensive hobby in this business.

Here is a story to cheer you up. I had a buddy in Texas that had 300 feet of 2.375″ rod stuck in this nasty gumbo type. He was everywhere. Wriggled. Wet. Tore. Nought. He was just about to dig a huge hole for the rod when he finally called me. I asked him, “Did you pull it and spin it clockwise with a little down-pressure?” “No,” said he. He tried it, and in 5 minutes that rod was beginning to creep out. Sometimes the trick is to push down to break the tension, then pull up. It takes the binding point off the bottom.

The Break: The All-in-One “Oh Crap” Button

And then. There’s the moment you fear. You can hear the metal groan, the crack and torque spikes. You’ve broken it. It happens . Be gentle with yourself. You are no longer a driller, you are a surgeon.

When you break the rod, your only goal is to get that fish out of the hole. So that means you grab your overshot tool, your spear, or whatever fishing tools you have. This is where your experience really comes into play. But seriously? This is also when I tell my customers to give me a call. Not because I’m a sales guy, but because I’ve been on the rig with you.” “That rod is of metal I know. I know what size spear to get so I don’t rip the box end up. Don’t guess. Just pick up the phone and dial.

Just a Few Words About Prevention (I’m So Tired of These Calls)

I know I said I wasn’t going to lecture, but I’d be a bad sales rep if I didn’t slip this in. Getting stuck is lame. But I can usually blame it 90% of the time on one thing: bad mud management.

If you are drilling in sand you have too thin a fluid and the cuttings fall out of suspension around the rod. Bam. Caught. If you are in clay, you are hydro-locking the rod in a mud plug because your fluid is too heavy. It is like trying to pull a nail from a piece of cheese.

So, check your mud before you drill that pilot bore. Is it gripping the cuttings? Are your pumps operating at the proper flow rate? I know, it’s dull. We all just want to punch it in and be done with it, I know. But I promise you, I’ve spent more time on the phone with guys who were stuck than guys who took an extra 10 minutes to dial in their mud.

Closing Thought The Stick Is Not the End

Look, you get your drill rod stuck, it’s a rite of passage. It’s frustrating, it’s expensive and you’ll wonder why you didn’t become a barista. But it’s also where you learn the most. You learn the feel of the machine, the personality of the ground, the limits of your equipment.

Next time you are out there and you feel that bind starting, remember the wiggle. Remember the soak. And most importantly, remember to breathe.
