The #1 Mistake New HDD Operators Make With Drill Pipe (And How To Fix It Right Now)

Let me tell you about the first time I watched a new operator kill a string of drill pipe in less than 45 minutes.

I was at a customer’s place doing a normal check-in after they had bought a new set of rods from us. Bright, shiny, good-looking pipe. The kind you feel good about looking at. The new guy was on the rig and wanting to prove himself. And bless his heart, he was on the go. Quick. Efficient. Or so he believed.

He was connecting as if he were possessed. Snap, snap, snap. Rod after rod down-hole. I remember standing there and going, “Man, this kid has got rhythm.” And then I saw something. He wasn’t waiting on the torque to get into the sweet spot. He was rolling the dice. A little squeak from the vise? Satisfactory. A little hesitation in the spin? Close enough.

Three hours later when they pulled that string back out, every thread on those brand-new rods looked like somebody had taken sandpaper to them. Gall all over the place. Shoulders blossomed. $15,000 worth of drill pipe wasted because someone wanted to save five seconds per connection.

And that was my Aha! moment. And is precisely why I am writing this today.

The #1 Mistake

It’s as simple as that. Not making up your drill pipe to the right torque at the surface.

I can’t tell you how many new operators—hell, some veterans—think they can “tighten it up downhole.” They’re working out that the rotation and the weight of the string will seat the threads properly when they start to drill.

Sorry, that doesn’t work that way.

“Your drill pipe threads have to take all the torque that should go through the shoulders of the connection without being made up to spec at the surface. And threads? They were not built for that. They are meant to seal, to align, not to carry the load.

Here’s what happens next:

The pin begins to mushroom

The box starts to flare

Threads grind and grate against one another

Next thing you know you have a connection that’s about as reliable as a paper towel in a rainstorm

Why New Guys Do It (And Why It’s So Damn Tempting)

I understand. You are on a building site. The boss breathing down your throat. The clock is ticking. And that torque wrench or those extra few seconds in the vise seem like wasted time.

I’ve had guys literally wave me off when I mentioned checking their makeup torque. “Nah, man, it’s all right. “I’ve been doing this for six months.” Six months. That’s adorable.

The thing is, damage doesn’t appear immediately. You complete the bore, everything appears fine and you think you’ve gotten away with it. But that tube? You just cut its life by years. And next time, or next time, it’s gonna snap 200 feet downhole. And then you’re not just buying new pipe. You are fishing for broken steel in the dark. And that costs money. And humiliating. And frankly an absolute nightmare.

How to Fix It Right Now

Ok, enough with the doom and gloom. Here’s what you need to do. It’s so easy you’ll want to kick yourself.

Step 1: Know your numbers. Every drill pipe has a recommended recommended makeup torque specification. Locate it. Write it down on a card. Put it on the inside of the cab. Heck, if you have to tattoo it on your forearm. Most API standard pipes are in the range of 800 to 1000 N·m, but check your pipe.

Step 2: Use the rig. Not your gut. Use your HDD rig to properly torque pipe. Don’t judge by touch. Don’t pick “that sounds about right.” Use the meter. If you have matched your drill and pipe correctly, the rig should be able to hit the sweet spot every single time.

Step 3: Watch it work. Don’t walk away when the pipe is up. Don’t move. Watch the torque build up. Feel the connection seat. Once you know what to look for, you will actually be able to feel the difference between a good connection and a bad connection.

Step 4: Thread break in. If you are running new pipe, run a few make and break cycles on the surface first to break in those threads. It’s like breaking in a new pair of shoes; it’s a pain, but it has to be done.

The good news

The thing that I love about this industry is the fix is almost always cheaper than the mistake. Getting the torque right is worth a few extra seconds per connection, saving you thousands of dollars in premature pipe failure. And to be honest? It doesn’t slow you down at all once you get used to it.

I was on a site last month with a crew that had been running the same string of pipe for 4 years. Four years! I asked the operator what his trick was. He shrugged. “I just torque them right, every time. It takes an extra second. “No big deal.”
