Been in this hdd world for about 5 years now selling rods, breaking rods, watching guys baby rods and watching other guys just absolutely murder them. And there’s one question that’s asked at every single job site, right after a beer (or a near-miss):
“Can we just cut these threads and send ‘em down again?
That’s the million dollar question, right? Because drill rods are expensive. Like, “how-did-I-explain-this-to-the-boss” pricy. And your pile of used pipes is growing every week. And you look at that rusty, battered stick with the mushroomed threads and think, “Eh, just a quick touch-up on the lathe, and she’s good as new, huh?”
I thought so.
So here’s what I’ve learned, the hard way, mostly by watching other people’s jobs go sideways.
The Day I Quit Saying, “Just Recut It”
So about 3 years ago I had a customer, we’ll call him Dave, because that’s his name, who was cheap. Not in a bad way. He was a real old school guy. He’d been laying water lines before I was born and he trusted his hands over any factory spec sheet.
He sent me a picture of a rod that looked like it had been dragged behind a truck for 50 miles. The threads were mashed, the shoulders were battered and there was a small hairline crack near the box end. He asked me, “Can we cut it back an inch and retread it?”
I said, “Dave, technically, yes. But then shouldn’t you? “Probably not.”

He did it regardless.
Two weeks later he rang me and I could hear the silence of a stopped rig in the background. That’s never a good thing. The recut rod had snapped at the base of the new threads—the stress riser had got him. They were 80 feet down, fishing for a $1,200 rod, with $3,000 of lost time. “Shoulda just bought the new one huh”, he told me later.
That was my epiphany. Not because I was right, but because I saw: We treat reconditioning as a yes/no issue. But it’s really a matter of “when” and “how much”.
Let’s talk about what “re-cutting” actually does
Consider the threads on your drill rod to be like the tread on your truck tire. If you take a little bit of worn rubber off, you get more grip, of course. But if you shave too much, the tire gets thin, heats up and blows out on the highway.
Recut threads same game. You take a lathe and you literally cut the steel away to make a fresh, sharp thread profile. Sounds good, right? A fresh bite = better torque transfer.
But here’s the sneaky part no one tells you about:
You are also changing the shoulder placement
On most HDD rods the shoulder (that flat face that abuts the next rod) is the true work horse. It takes the compression load. The threads just keep it all together. When you recut the threads you have to move that shoulder back a few thousandths of an inch.” When you assemble the joint now, the threads might be carrying more load than they were built to. The shoulders aren’t kissing quite the way they used to.
It’s not a guess. That is physics. And physics does not care about your budget.
The “One Recut” Rule (And Why I Break It)
Okay, I’m gonna give you the rule that I live by, not the factory rule, but the rule that I actually sleep at nite by.
Usually one re-cut is okay. Two is iffy. Three is a disaster ready to happen.
Think about it. Every time you chuck that rod in the lathe, and shave off material, you are reducing the wall thickness at the connection. And you’re also work hardening the surface. Sure, the steel gets harder—but also more brittle. That’s the trade-off you won’t see on a spec sheet.
I had customers who recut the same rod three times and got away with it. For a time. Then one day that third recut had had enough on a 1500-foot pullback in clay. Split the difference. They went fishing for six hours.
When the broken piece was brought into my shop I could see fatigue lines radiating from the thread root. It looked like a map of bad decisions.
So now I tell a customer when they ask me:
“If it’s the first recut and the rod was in decent shape before, I’ll sleep good. And if it is the second? I’ll be anxious. And what if it’s the third? “I’ll bring you a bucket of coffee while you’re fishing.”
The Dirty Secret of “Factory Reconditioning”
Some shops do “factory reconditioning” which is cutting the connection area again and then re-heat-treating it. And guess what? That’s the good stuff. It alleviates the stresses in the cutting process and recovers some of the ductility.
But here’s the rub – and I’m not telling you this to sell you more rods, I’m telling you because I’ve seen it fail:
Most recuts on sites aren’t done with that kind of care.
Most of you are in the back of a pickup truck with a mobile lathe, on a sputtering generator, with a guy who’s been doing it “his way” for 20 years. And that guy could be a wizard, I’ve met a couple. But he isn’t heat treating the connection after. He’s not checking for hardness. He’s not using a gage to get the exact shoulder position.
And that’s okay for a “get-me-through-today” fix. But for a big job? A 2,000-foot tunnel under a highway?
I would rather have a used rod that has never been recut than one that has been recut twice in a muddy yard with a dull tool.
My Real Life Checklist for Agreeing to Recuts
Because I’m not a total pessimist. Sometimes I’m like, “Yeah, go ahead.
When a customer asks me, my mental list is:
How old is the pole? If it’s got less than 5000 feet of drilling on it and the threads just got a little galled? Clean it up, of course.
How deep you diving? Under 300 feet?! Low-risk. More than 800 feet? High risk. I’m nervous about the torque build up on long bores all the time.
What is the ground ? Clay and sandstone? Do not pull the threads. Granite, or broken rock? That’s mean. Vibration kills recut rods faster than anything.
Has it ever been recut before? If so, I’m skeptical already.
You got a thread gage? No caliper. A real measure. If you can’t check the pitch diameter you are gambling.
One other thing, check the OD of the pipe near the box end. If you see a smiley face — the little crescent of wear from the pipe wrench — that’s fine. But if you see a flat spot or a bruise? That means the steel has already given (stretched). Recutting is like having new tires on a bent axle. Time waster.
The One Thing I Wish All Drillers Knew
Now here’s the big one, and I’m going to shout it a little:
And re-using a recut rod is not the same as re-using a new rod.
That’s a no-brainer, right? But the way some dudes act you’d think a recut was a factory new. It isn’t. It’s a hack. And with repairs come trade-offs.

I was lucky to have an early mentor, an old guy named Red, who told me something that stuck:
Son, the drill rod is not in debt to you. You owe it to him. You stick it in the ground and you turn it and you pull it and you pound it with mud. It has had its day. “Don’t be the guy who ships it back to work on a cane and calls it a day.”
That was a blow. Because it’s not about the money. It is about predictability.
When you run a new rod downhole you know what you are getting. When you send a recut rod you are adding a variable. And in this business variables cost time, money and sometimes your reputation.
My Last Word (For What It’s Worth)
So what about re-cutting threads and reusing pipe?
Yeah – if you’re smart about it.
But it is not a “yes” or “no.” It’s a “how much do I trust this hunk of steel?”
If I were you – and I have been, I used to run a small rig before I went to sales – this is what I would do:
Store your recut rods separately. Paint a stripe on each recut.
Recut rods should only be used at the back of the string (near the starter rod, where the load is lower). Never in the middle of a long downtrend.
And for the love of everything holy, do not recut a rod that has already shown signs of fatigue, such as cracks, severe galling or that “orange peel” texture on the steel. That’s the steel crying for help.
Yup, I sell new rods. To be honest, we make good ones. But I’d rather have you buy fewer rods from me, and use them wisely, than buy more rods because you snapped the ones you had, pushing a bad recut too far.
No, this is not a pitch. That’s me wanting you to do your job, pack it up and get home before it’s dark.
Now check your thread gage. And maybe give that old rod a pat on the back before you send it down again.
